When to clean carpeted stairs
Stairs show wear in a narrow line. The useful time to clean is when that line looks dull, long before the edges catch up.

Keep it practical
What is worth doing.
A flight can look acceptable from the side and still be due in the center of each tread.
All care notesWatch the nose and the center. Soil and compression sit on the front edge of each tread and the middle of the walking line. The sides stay lighter, which hides how tired the stair has become.
Use a season, a move, or the salt. Late-winter salt, a listing, a move, or the same visit as the rest of the carpet are sensible times. A grey walking line is reason enough on its own.
Keep the flight usable. Tell us how many flights there are and whether anyone needs the stair the same day. Damp treads are slippery, so dry time belongs in the plan.
Say what the edge is made of. Wood nosings, metal rods, and a runner that stops short of the full tread need a different touch than carpet that covers a closed stair wall to wall.
